I like vintage Umbro jerseys, track tops and nylon jackets
My favorite Umbro. I started to like them when I was in junior high school, and I used to buy Umbro boots and wear. In recent years, vintage soccer items have been gaining popularity, and Umbro seems to be especially popular.
However, unlike Adidas and Nike, the brand has not received much attention as a second-hand clothing brand, so there was no comprehensive information. So, using my Umbro collection that I have collected over the years, I systematically organized tags and other age determinations, and put together the information myself.
By the way, the reason why I came to like Umbro is because Yusuke Mori, who I liked from my hometown, Kawasaki Frontale, wore it. For me, he was like an idol player. My favorite character is Yuki Kojima, also known as Umbro Kamen from the manga Whistle!. No, but Shige-san (lotto) is also cool.

History of Umbro, Origin of Brand Name
Founded in 1924 in Wilmslow, a suburb of Manchester, England. The company was founded by brothers Harold C. Humphries and Wallace Humphries, who named the company "Humphrey Brothers Company." From the spellings of the Humphrey Brothers, I took um and bro and created a brand called umbro. It's like an abbreviation.
It seems that at first it was a small company like a delivery business that didn't have anything to do with uniforms or soccer. After that, he started a uniform business. Manchester City and Portsmouth both reached the 1934 FA Cup Final wearing Umbro shirts. It seems that the popularity in England has increased since around this time.
In the Second World War, military wear was manufactured. He also carried out activities such as providing employee cafeterias to the military. Even after the war, we provided many soccer uniforms, and our share in England increased steadily. In addition to soccer, the supply of other sportswear such as the British Olympic team, track and field, and tennis has increased.
At the 1958 World Cup in Sweden, the Brazilian national team won their first victory using Umbro uniforms. A competition where 17-year-old Pele made a brilliant debut. In 1962, he also won two consecutive victories at the Chilean Games.
In 1959, the world's first replica uniform kit was released. It's a normal replica uniform now, but Umbro is the pioneer. Umbro's used uniforms from the 80's and 90's also have the words "replica kit" written on them.
The 1966 World Cup in England. The England national team, which was held in their own country, won the championship for the first time wearing the uniform of their home brand "umbro". Almost 60 years later, England have still won only once. It seems that 15 of the 16 teams participating in this tournament wore Umbro uniforms. In addition, 85% of the clubs in the domestic league use Umbro uniforms, and the popularity of Umbro is increasing worldwide.
In 1974, one of the founders, Harold Humphries, died and was succeeded by his sons Stuart and John. The familiar double diamond logo was born at this timing. We continue to provide high-quality uniforms and have grown into a brand that is also known as the “Dior of soccer.”
When 1980s striker Alan Shearer sent a letter to Umbro asking for sporting goods when he was 17, Umbro provided the spikes free of charge. After turning professional, Shearer officially signed with Umbro. In the late 1980s, half pants nicknamed umbros were popular in the United States.
In the 1990s, Umbro became a global top brand in line with the ability and popularity of club teams such as Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United, as well as national teams such as England, Sweden, and Ireland. This period is the golden age for Umbro, and even second-hand uniforms are particularly expensive.

Additionally, the 1990s Britpop movement is another reason for Umbro's popularity. A genre of music called Britpop, represented by Blur and Oasis. In particular, the Manchester City uniform worn by Liam Gallagher, the drill top, and the nylon half coat are famous in the second-hand clothing industry. The styling at that time was called Britpop fashion, and it has become a genre of second-hand clothes. Liam's own brand "Pretty Green" later collaborated with Umbro.

In Japan, the company names Across and Suzuki Sports are listed on tags from the 1990s, but the details are unknown. Descente, whose license agreement with Adidas ended in 1998, replaced Umbro. In 1999, Descente acquired the right to use the trademark in Japan and is now the distributor in Japan. In 2013, the Umbro trademark was acquired in South Korea. In 2014, he signed a contract with Kakeru Aizawa, the main character of the manga "Knight of Area".
Quote/Reference Umbro -Wikipedia
In 2000, the logo was changed, and the uniforms became closer to the current design.
In 2007, it was acquired by Nike, the world's major sporting goods manufacturer.
At the end of 2012, it was sold to Iconix Brand Group of the United States. In Japan, Descente has an independent contract, so it seems that there was no big impact.
In Japan, Gamba Osaka has worn Umbro since 2003. Umbro's popularity increased in the 2000s due to the popularity of Gamba Osaka, who won the J. became.
After being sold by Nike in 2013, Umbro added lowercase umbro to its logo, returning to its classic design. Around 2010, around 2010, around the time of Nike's acquisition and sale to Iconix Brand Group, fewer teams adopted Umbro uniforms globally. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Umbro was the only England representative.
In 2013, the England national team, who had been using Umbro for many years, also switched to Nike. Swedish representative also to Adidas.
In the J League, Kashiwa Reysol, who had been Umbro for many years, changed to 2010, and Sagan Tosu also changed to 2012. I liked Reysol's Umbro uniform, it was stylish. In addition, Gamba Osaka, which has the most Umbro image, will change to Hummel from 2023, and the impression that the number of J-League teams using Umbro has decreased recently.
On the other hand, elements such as design, Liam Gallagher's wearing, and background that walked with the history of England are attractive, and there are many persistent fans. With a wide range of developments, such as collaboration with street brands, it is growing as a fashion brand that goes beyond soccer uniforms. It is a particularly popular brand in South Korea, and is popular as a fashion item that goes beyond sports.

Umbro logo, meaning and tag dating
*The information listed below is not official information from Umbro or Descente, but includes information and speculations based on my own research. I'm here. Please read for reference only.
It has been a diamond logo since its inception in 1924, and has been a double diamond since 1974. The rhombus of the diamond represents the intention to "become a brand that continues to shine", and the two diamonds represent the two founder brothers.

Most of the football-related second-hand clothes you'll find are from the 90s onwards. Vintages from the 70s and 80s are rare and hard to find, so they are expensive.
I don't have official data, but from my collection and experience, I can guess that the 80's lowercase logos were made in England, and some were made in the United States. After the 1990s, production will shift to Asian countries such as China, South Korea, Thailand, and Japan. Since 2000, most of the products have been made in China, and some are made in Turkey.
When I introduced all of my personal belongings, the video ended up being about an hour long. Vintage Umbro has never been introduced in a mass, so I would be happy if you could find even one of your favorites and give me a hint when looking for second-hand clothes.
Types of logos, era determination
Although there are minor changes, there are four main types of Umbro logos.
70s-80s big diamond lowercase letters.
90s big diamond capital letters.
A fine diamond from the 2000s.
Deca round diamond in the 2010s. letters are lowercase.
You rarely see pre-70s logos in person. With the nylon jacket boom in recent years, the number of Umbros seen in second-hand clothing stores has increased a little, but they are often sold by mistake because they are not organized systematically for judging their ages. There was also a second-hand clothing store that wrote that the 2020 model was the 80s.
Pre-2000s Deca logos have double diamonds with sharp corners. The difference is that the corners are rounded after the 2000s. Since 2013 and later logos have almost the same lowercase letters, it is possible to distinguish the age of the logo from the corner of the double diamond.

Tailored in England logo tag is also a product after 2008.
Vintage Umbro age determination, country of origin, tag notation, zip maker
There is almost no difference in the tags, and the age can be determined only by the difference in the logo. Before the 2000s, it was almost unified with a blue tag. The inner tag is often missing, and the country of manufacture is often unknown, but if the logo is from the 90s or later, it can be assumed that it is mostly made in Asia.

I don't see them very often, but very rarely you can find them in vintage shops. In the 1960s, soccer shirts often did not have brand names, and there were almost no replica uniforms. It seems that work and outdoor items such as boy scouts will appear in the market rather than soccer-related items.

Wool sports jackets and post-war influences, you can find work and military items that Umbro has worked on in vintage used clothing.
70s-80s Big Diamond Lowercase Tag
Umbro from the 70's and 80's, which is hard to find even in replica uniforms. Items that have skyrocketed in price in recent years. Zippers are often anonymous.
This era is mainly made in England. Also marked on the tag. The tag "THE CHOICE OF CHAMPION" is rare.
The size of the tag and the thickness of the font are not unified so much, and they are quite disjointed.
There is also a pattern in which the embroidered logo on the chest and the logo on the neck tag differ in lowercase and uppercase letters. Is it a transitional model?
There was also a jacket made in China with a lower case logo and a replica kit tag. The zip is SCIL. Lowercase logo but 90s?
1992 Scotland uniform. Although it was adopted around 1990, the logo is still in lowercase. It may be difficult to accurately separate 80s and 90s by lowercase or uppercase. Around 1990, both lowercase and uppercase letters existed, and production in the United States and China began in addition to the UK, so it may be a transitional period where each detail is mixed.
This is also made in England, so there may have been some left in the early 90's. You can probably find some made in America from around the 80's.
80's American swing top. This is also a rare Umbro. Deca diamond lower case embroidery and tag. It's a paper tag that looks like American second-hand clothes, and it says "Made in America" in English and French. FABRIQUE AUX EU is MADE IN USA in French. When you see "EU", you think it's Europe.
It has the RN (Registered Number) found on vintage American clothing from 1959 onwards, RN14627. I looked it up on the database site and found a different company called STONE MFG CO. Did the number change, or was it an import or manufacturer at the time?
The zip is YKK. Comes with a chinstrap and a double diamond tape hidden under the collar for a cool look.
I also found a product made in Hong Kong with a tag from this era. The RN number was the same as the American one.
The most popular 1989-93 Manchester City jersey. I compared the genuine product with the counterfeit product.
Manchester City is especially popular among vintage soccer uniforms and game shirts. Various types such as genuine products, boots, counterfeit products, and score draws were gathered at hand, so I compared the details.
This is just an amateur's personal opinion, but I compared the uniform that seems to be genuine with other uniforms such as scoredraw. The points I was particularly interested in are described below, but the video explains them in more detail.
Manchester City 1989-1991 uniform. Unusually, the main sponsor brother is not included.
Flocky print with ridges, team logo with three-dimensional text.
Lower case tag, made in the UK, a rare inner tag.
Another same age, genuine product, the brother was a soaked print.
Manchester City 1991-1993 uniform.
Three lines enter the right arm. Umbro tag replica kit, made in England, no underarm tag, lower case umbro with second tag on neck, ridged flocky print.
Brother's flocky print has steps and the team logo has a three-dimensional effect. The Scoredraw reissue has a slightly different shadow logo pattern.
Umbro uniforms in the early 90's often have a poly body and a change of neck fabric. Only the lining is cotton twill, and the neck is polo shirt type cotton.
90s big diamond tag
The most common vintage Umbro tags are from this era.
Rare pullovers and sweatshirts. On the left is a rare second-hand clothing called a drill top. In the 1990s, football became a commercial business worldwide, and clothing began to be mass-produced in Asia. The characteristic of this period is that there are items with logos embroidered in large sizes.
Like second-hand and vintage clothing, it was a time of great change in the global industry. Similar to soccer, many replica uniforms were manufactured and started to be sold.
The tag is almost unified with blue and white embroidery. There are several types of sizing. It's my own guess, but the upper row may be the European standard, and the lower row (the size is in red with a white frame) may be the American standard?
It often has a paper tag that is often seen on American used clothes, and most Umbro made in America has a tag at the bottom. Levi's denim also has different tags, so it may be that the US and Europe have different jurisdictions.
Sometimes there are also white tags.
You'll also find tags that say "Made in China" in French, as well as the "Assembly in MEXICO" tag often seen on 90s. There are many country of origin notation of China, Thailand, and the United States. Made in Malaysia and made in Korea. Some tags are written in Spanish and Finnish, but the country of manufacture is often unknown. Production is in China, and it seems that the language of the tag notation was changed for exporting countries.
The white tag is often attached to the second flag tag. The material of the inner tag is different from the others. There seems to be a Romanian one as well.
1993-1995 Manchester United away shirt. Shadow stripes are cool in black. Capitalized logo, but made in England. Does that mean that in the early 1990s there were British manufactures as well?
Brazil national team around 1991. Umbro was also used in the 1994 World Cup USA tournament. Mysterious G size. What is G? I think it's the first letter of the size notation in Portuguese. The tag is written in Portuguese, but the tag is missing and partly cut, so the country of origin is unknown. I also found ACROS made in Japan and a replica kit made in UK with the same design on the net. If it is a 1994 model, it seems that there is also a product made in Brazil.
There are many unsigned zips, but there are also YKK VISLON zips and SCIL zips. SCIL has a zip that you don't see in second-hand clothes, so I looked it up, but I didn't really understand it. It seems to be a zip manufacturer in China or Taiwan. Impression that it is often attached to products made in China and Japan in the 90's. Many YKK products are produced in Thailand.
Even though it's a big letter logo tag from the 90's, the inner tag is a sweatshirt with a small letter tag from the 80's.
Spanish and the city of REDONDELA in Spain are listed. Was it also produced in Spain, or is it the notation of the distributor?
I also found one made in South Africa!
In the 90s, in addition to Descente, Suzuki Sport and Across Japanese Umbro also exist
It is believed that Umbro products made in Japan existed in the early 90's before Descente handled Umbro.
90s tag windbreaker top and bottom. The zip is made by SCIL.
Across Co., Ltd. in the inner tag. Another company may have held the license before Descente handled it.
90s tag game shirt. Rare purple tag. The inner tag is Japanese. Made by Acros. OK size? UK size? L with a mysterious size notation.

On the net, I found Across even in the 80's lowercase tags. I thought it was Across International, which currently handles Reebok, but it's different because the company was established in 2000. I couldn't find out about this company called Acros.
Reference Company Information | Acros International Inc.
Half pants like gym clothes.
I don't see this choice of champions tag very often.
There is a company name called Suzuki Sports, but I didn't know this company either.
90s nylon pullover hoodie with big diamond logo. Manchester United model, made by Sony Creative Products. Sony Creative Products is an existing company, and it is a company of licensing business such as characters and goods production. A tag seen on Manchester United goods in Japan around 1996. Did Sony own the rights to Man U at the time? 1997 Kashiwa Reysol's uniform was also made by Sony Creative Products.
Made by Descente with a 90s tag. The fine diamond in the 2000s and the inner tag are almost the same. The zip is YKK VISLON.
The 90s tags are booty and fake. How to distinguish between real and fake soccer uniforms?
In the 90's, there were a lot of counterfeit logos. Manchester United's Beckham, Cantona's Champions League model, and Manchester City's early 90's model are considered to be fake (boot goods) in Yahoo auctions and Mercari. As a common point, there are many mysterious excuses written in the product description that the photo of the inner tag is not posted, that it is an overseas product, that it is a replica.
Sorry, I can't say for sure how to tell them apart. There are too many uncertainties, and we cannot take responsibility for how to distinguish them. In addition, some fake uniforms are so high quality that you can't judge them at all. However, if you look closely, you can easily tell them apart. The points are the texture of the blue tag, the color, the presence or absence of the inner tag, flocky print, etc. If you look at the details, you can predict to some extent. Some fakes are no longer worthy of comparison.
The most obvious modern tag on uniforms from the 90's. The position of the Umbro logo is also shifted, and it has a mysterious URL of unbro.com.
Fake uniforms, fakes, and imitations have many things in common, such as the following.
- Tagged with the Umbro logo from a different era
- It says unbro, not umbro
- There is embroidery that is different from the real thing at the time (especially the game embroidery under the emblem, which is common in the Champions League final model)
- It has shoulder and arm patches that are different from those of the time (especially flag and league patches. Not many actual items have shoulder patches in the first place)
- Printed with a different font from the time, the texture of the flocky print that is common in the 90s is different, and it is printed with a different material that should not be flocky
- Numbers written in ballpoint pen
- The embroidery is rough, and the brand logo, which was embroidered at the time, is printed
- If you look closely at the printed logo, there is still a strange frame
- The seams of the emblem are rough, the embroidery thread of the emblem is sewn continuously, or the finish is poor
- In the case of a brand new product with a tag, if you look closely at the brand logo, the size of the font is not uniform, and there is a sense of incongruity
*Recently, the popularity of vintage and retro soccer uniforms has increased, and we have received a lot of inquiries about how to identify counterfeit uniforms. I love uniforms and have been collecting them for many years, but I'm just an amateur. The information written here is published without any grounds or investigation. Please make your own judgment as to whether the information is true or not. We cannot take any responsibility.
This is just my personal opinion, but I tried to explain it in the video. If anyone is interested, please take a look at this blog and the reference links below and judge for yourself.

Thin diamond tag from the 2000s
This logo is probably the most familiar in Japan.
Double diamonds are now longer and more stylish. The 2002 England uniform with this logo is still popular.
The content of the tag has increased, and the country of origin is almost China. Improvements in printing technology have made tags almost indestructible.
The Japanese standard Umbro has the notation of Descente Co., Ltd. on the inner tag.
Deca round diamond tag from the 2010s
Since 2008, the double diamond shape has returned to the classic shape, and since around 2013, lowercase letters have been added.
Mostly produced in China. The two pictures are European standards, so they are made in Turkey.
It has a tag inside
.
Some products have a small Descente tag sewn on the inner tag, which seems to be manufactured according to European standards.
Tag made in Bangladesh. No underarm tags, only neck tags.
Be careful with this tag. White logo on black, big diamond capital letters. It is almost the same as the 90's tag, but this tag is often attached to reprinted models after 2010. I have not been able to confirm exactly how many years it has existed, but if it has a Descente inner tag, I think it is at least after 2000.
Don't judge the 90's from the neck tag alone, and check the inner tag and zip for black tags. The impression is that YKK size 5C is often used for zippers. The top of the zipper is characterized by matte black. If the tag is cut off, don't judge by the chest logo alone, check the zip. The ProTraining series, which has been reprinted since 2010, has the same design and shoulder tape as it was at that time, but it is available at a low price, so it is a target item in Umbro.
